Gdynia is the most modern-feeling of the three Tri-City centres and one of the easiest places in Poland to build a child-friendly day: hands-on science, sea animals, real museum ships, a beach playground and a free funicular are all within a relatively small area.

Gdynia is part of the Tri-City

Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia are separate cities, but visitors can treat them almost like one destination. They form the Tri-City (Trójmiasto), a continuous urban area along the Baltic coast. SKM suburban trains make it easy to stay in one city and visit attractions in the other two without changing hotels.

Experyment Science Centre

One of the strongest family attractions in the entire Tri-City.

Experyment is built around interactive exhibits rather than display cases. Children can test ideas themselves, with themed areas covering subjects such as the human body, physics, nature and water. The centre says its exhibit descriptions are available in Polish, English and Ukrainian.

Current 2026 reference: regular admission is listed at 30 PLN, concession 25 PLN and a 2 adults + 1 child family ticket at 80 PLN. The centre suggests about two hours for the exhibitions.

Best animal attraction

Gdynia Aquarium

An easy indoor stop with enough variety for both preschoolers and older children.

The Aquarium presents aquatic animals from different parts of the world across eight exhibition halls. There is also a free web-based eGuide available in English, so foreign visitors do not have to rely only on Polish descriptions.

Parent tip: this is right on the South Pier, so combine it with the ships and waterfront instead of making a separate trip.

Best ship for most families

Dar Pomorza

A real historic sailing ship is much easier for children to understand than a maritime museum behind glass.

The three-masted training ship was built in 1909 and today can be explored on four levels. Visitors see spaces such as the between-decks, engine room, officers’ rooms, galley and deck.

2026 reference: the National Maritime Museum lists an average visit of about 40 minutes and English captions throughout the exhibition.

Best for military-history kids

ORP Błyskawica

Choose this over Dar Pomorza if your child is fascinated by warships, engines and naval history.

ORP Błyskawica is a preserved Polish destroyer moored on the same waterfront. It is a compact visit and pairs naturally with the Aquarium, Dar Pomorza and the beach.

Important: the ship is seasonal. The Navy Museum’s 2026 information lists it as unavailable from 1 November to 31 March.

Gdynia City Beach + playground

One of Gdynia’s best family advantages: the children can be on the sand minutes after sightseeing.

The central beach sits beside the waterfront attractions and has a large children’s playground. This makes it ideal after the Aquarium or ships when young children need free movement rather than another ticketed attraction.

Parent hack: do the “serious” attraction first, then promise the playground and beach afterwards.

Best tiny adventure

Free funicular to Kamienna Góra

Only a couple of minutes long — and precisely the sort of small thing children remember.

The free glass funicular climbs about 40 metres over a 96-metre route to Kamienna Góra park and viewpoint. The official operator says one car holds seven passengers, or five people plus one stroller.

Parent tip: combine this with the city beach rather than making a special cross-city trip for a two-minute ride.

Best scenic half-day

Orłowo: beach, pier and cliff

This is the prettier, slower Gdynia — and a good alternative to another museum.

Orłowo combines a sandy beach, a wooden pier and the distinctive wooded cliff. It feels completely different from central Gdynia and works particularly well as a relaxed morning or late afternoon.

2026 access note: during spring maintenance, corrosion was found in part of the pier structure and the pier head remained closed in the latest official update we found. The rest of Orłowo is still worth visiting, but check the current pier status before promising children a full walk to the end.

Amazonia indoor playroom

Not a reason to travel to Gdynia — but useful when young children need to burn energy indoors.

This central indoor playroom has slides, tunnels, trampolines, a ball pool and a separate zone for children aged 0–3. Keep it in reserve for a very wet afternoon rather than putting it at the top of your sightseeing list.

What if it rains?

Gdynia is probably the strongest of the three Tri-City centres for a full child-focused rainy day.

🌧 Best rainy-day choices

  • Experyment — our first choice for ages roughly 4–13.
  • Gdynia Aquarium — especially easy with preschoolers.
  • Navy Museum — useful with older children interested in ships and military history.
  • Amazonia — when sightseeing has failed and the priority is simply active play.

☀️ Save these for better weather

  • Orłowo — beach and scenery are the whole point.
  • City Beach playground — an ideal free afternoon break.
  • Kamienna Góra — the view matters more than the ride itself.
  • Waterfront ships — much nicer when you can comfortably linger outside between visits.

An easy 1-day Gdynia plan with kids

There are two good versions. Choose according to your children, not according to a sightseeing checklist.

Option A — younger kids

Morning: Aquarium. Lunch: waterfront. Afternoon: city beach playground + free funicular.

Option B — science kids

Morning: Experyment. Lunch: Redłowo or centre. Afternoon: Orłowo beach and pier area.

Option C — ship kids

Morning: Dar Pomorza + ORP Błyskawica. Afternoon: Aquarium or beach depending on energy.
