Our favourite summer day trip

Hel with Kids by Boat

For children, the transport is half the attraction. Instead of sitting in summer traffic on the peninsula, cross the Gulf of Gdańsk by passenger ship, visit the seal sanctuary, eat lunch in Hel and finish with the beach.

Which boat should your family take?

There is no single best departure point. Choose the one that matches where you are staying and the current timetable.

Our summer favourite

Sopot → Hel

45 min

The quickest crossing in the 2026 high season on the Amber Express. Excellent if you are staying in Sopot or want the boat ride to stay short for younger children.

Gdynia → Hel

~1 h

A very natural family departure from the waterfront. This route also tends to have a broader operating season than the peak-summer Sopot service.

Gdańsk → Hel

~2 h

The longest crossing, but also the most scenic “boat-trip” experience. In 2026 the direct timetable includes an 08:20 departure and a 15:20 return that work as a full day.

Our easy family day in Hel

Do not try to complete every museum and military site. For most children, the seals and sea are the point.

Boat to HelArrive early enough for the ticket office and check that your sailing is operating.
Fokarium seal sanctuaryIf your arrival time works, aim for a feeding talk. In July–August 2026 they are scheduled at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30.
Lunch + Wiejska Street / harbourKeep this unhurried. Hel is compact enough that you do not need a complicated city plan.
Beach or tip-of-the-peninsula walkChoose one. With younger children, beach time usually wins over another ticketed attraction.
Walk back to the harbour + return sailingLeave buffer time. Missing the boat from Hel is a much bigger problem than missing a tram in Gdańsk.

What is actually worth doing with kids?

🦭 Fokarium

The University of Gdańsk seal sanctuary is an education and conservation centre rather than a standard zoo.

Open dailySummer: 10:00–18:002026: 25 / 20 PLN
There can be a queue and there is no reservation system for entry. In summer, buying an online ticket can make the day less uncertain.

🏖️ Hel beach

Give the children actual free time. Hel has both bay-side and open-sea beach options; the city's official visitor guide lists the beaches as one of its core attractions.

FreeBest in summerFlexible timing

🚶 Tip-of-Poland walk

For older or energetic children, the boardwalks and paths towards the end of the peninsula give the trip a sense of destination beyond the harbour.

FreeOutdoorsGood after lunch

🌧️ If the weather turns

Hel also has museums and indoor options, including the Fisheries Museum. But if the forecast is truly poor before departure, we would usually save Hel for another day.

Weather-sensitive day trip

2026 boat-price reality

This is not a cheap transport option — think of the crossing as one of the day's attractions.

Sopot / Gdynia ↔ Hel

2026 return fare: 160 PLN adult, 130 PLN reduced. Children under 4 travel free. The Sopot service does not sell tickets online; sales are at the ticket office.

Gdańsk ↔ Hel

2026 return fare: 180 PLN adult, 150 PLN reduced. Children under 4 travel free. The crossing is much longer, so choose it because you want the boat experience.

Very important: some sailings are marked “R” (reserve). Żegluga Gdańska states that these may not operate if there is insufficient demand, and all sailings remain dependent on weather. Always check the official timetable on the day.
Last checked: August 2026. Boat schedules are highly seasonal. The itinerary remains useful, but always verify your exact sailing and return before building the day around it.
