Hel with Kids by Boat
For children, the transport is half the attraction. Instead of sitting in summer traffic on the peninsula, cross the Gulf of Gdańsk by passenger ship, visit the seal sanctuary, eat lunch in Hel and finish with the beach.
Water trams to Hel from Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia
In summer, Żegluga Gdańska runs passenger “water tram” connections to Hel from all three Tri-City centres. The sailing is part of the day, not just transport — choose the departure point that fits where you are staying and always check the live operating calendar.
Gdynia → Hel
40–60 min
A very easy departure from the Gdynia waterfront. Depending on the sailing, the 2026 crossing is around 40–60 minutes and drops you at Hel’s fishing harbour.
Gdańsk → Hel
~2 h
The longest crossing, but also the most complete boat-trip experience. The 2026 direct service takes about 1 h 50 min–2 h, so choose it if your children enjoy being on the water.
Our easy one-day family plan for Hel
Do not try to tick off every museum and military site. For us, the winning combination is boat + seals + lunch + sea.
Water tram to HelArrive with time for the ticket office and check that your sailing is operating. Some 2026 departures are reserve sailings and can be cancelled if demand is too low.
Fokarium seal sanctuaryIt is close to the harbour and is the obvious first stop with children. If your timing works, aim for a feeding talk; in July–August 2026 they are scheduled at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30.
PORTO by the harbourOur usual recommendation: relaxed, reasonably priced and right by the harbour, so it does not create another transport problem in the middle of the day.
Cypel or the open-sea beachThis is where families with small children should plan ahead: it is farther from the harbour/centre than it looks on a quick map glance. A compact stroller or a melex can make a big difference.
Return to the harbourLeave a proper buffer before the last sailing. If you stay one night in Hel, this is the part of the day you can happily stop worrying about.
What is actually worth doing with kids?
🦭 Fokarium
The University of Gdańsk seal sanctuary is an education and conservation centre rather than a standard zoo — and for our children it is the main reason to make the trip.

Good to know: there are no reservations and entry is first-come, first-served. Tickets can be bought online or from the machines by the entrance; feeding talks are included.

Local parent tips that can save the day
These are the practical things we would tell friends before they go.
👶 With under-4s: bring a compact stroller
The harbour, Fokarium and central Wiejska Street are easy, but the Cypel and open-sea beach are a noticeably longer walk. With a tired three- or four-year-old, that distance suddenly matters.
What we do: take a small umbrella stroller on the water tram, or use one of the melex services around Hel if legs are finished. Hel’s official tourism site lists multiple melex operators.
🚲 A very local adult version: boat out, bike back
We regularly see cyclists taking bikes aboard. Żegluga Gdańska sells dedicated bicycle tickets on the Hel routes in 2026. For fit adults, riding back towards the Tri-City is a brilliant long-day option; a large part of the route along the peninsula is beautiful.
Hel → Gdynia is roughly an 80 km ride, so this is an adult cycling day rather than a casual family add-on.
🌙 Consider one night in Hel
If you are still choosing accommodation, one night in Hel can turn the trip from a timetable exercise into a much slower mini-break. You can do the Fokarium and beach without constantly checking whether you will make the last boat back.

🏖️ Bay beach or open sea?
If everyone is already tired, do not force the Cypel. Hel has easier bay-side beach options too. Save the longer walk to the tip/open-sea side for a day when the children still have energy — or take a melex part of the way.
2026 boat-price reality
This is not a cheap transport option — think of the crossing as one of the day's attractions.
Sopot / Gdynia ↔ Hel
2026 return fare: 160 PLN adult, 130 PLN reduced. Children under 4 travel free. Bicycle tickets are also sold (check the exact one-way/return price for your route). The Sopot service sells tickets at the ticket office rather than online.
Gdańsk ↔ Hel
2026 return fare: 180 PLN adult, 150 PLN reduced. Children under 4 travel free; the operator also sells bicycle tickets. The crossing is much longer, so choose it because you want the boat experience.
Very important: some sailings are marked “R” (reserve). Żegluga Gdańska states that these may not operate if there is insufficient demand, and all sailings remain dependent on weather. Always check the official timetable on the day.
Last checked: August 2026. Boat schedules are highly seasonal. The itinerary remains useful, but always verify your exact sailing and return before building the day around it.
