Tri-City with Kids

One of the most useful things to know before visiting northern Poland: Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia are three separate cities, but you can travel between them as if they were one destination. Stay in one place, use the SKM train and give your children three very different kinds of day.

What exactly is the Tri-City?

In Polish it is called Trójmiasto. Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia form a nearly continuous coastal urban area. Their city borders are easy to miss, and frequent rail connections mean a family staying in central Gdańsk can have breakfast there, spend the afternoon on Sopot beach and return without treating it as a major day trip.

One hotel worksfor all three cities

Three cities, three different family days

That difference is exactly why the Tri-City works so well with children.

Where should a family stay?

You do not need three hotels. Pick one base according to the kind of trip you want.

Stay in Sopot

Best if the beach is central to the holiday, you have younger children, or you want to walk out of the hotel and immediately have sand, playgrounds and restaurants.

Stay in Gdynia

Worth considering if your children are especially interested in Experyment, the Aquarium and ships, or you prefer a more modern city feel.

2 days: Gdańsk + Sopot

The minimum we would recommend if you want to understand why the Tri-City is special.

How to move around with kids

🚆 SKM is the backbone

For travel between the three city centres, the suburban SKM train is usually the simplest option. It avoids city traffic and makes Sopot or Gdynia feel much closer than many first-time visitors expect.

  • Gdańsk Główny → Sopot: roughly 20 minutes.
  • Gdańsk Główny → Gdynia Główna: roughly 30 minutes.
  • Check the current timetable before travelling.

🚋 Then use local transport

Trams and buses fill the gaps inside each city. The core itinerary does not require a rental car. For families, staying reasonably close to an SKM station can matter more than being on the “perfect” street.

  • Gdańsk: trams are useful for beaches and many districts.
  • Sopot: the core centre and beach are very walkable.
  • Gdynia: use local transport for Experyment or Orłowo when needed.
Travel-time note: official Gdańsk tourism material describes the city borders as practically invisible and gives approximately 20 minutes by fast urban rail from Gdańsk Główny to Sopot and 30 minutes to Gdynia Główna. Timetables change, so use these as planning estimates rather than promises. Official Tri-City overview →
